The
Dalat Plateau is one of the five endemic bird areas (EBAs) in Vietnam
identified by BirdLife International. Eight of the eight restricted-range bird
species that occur in this EBA, Crested Argus Rheinardia ocellata,
Yellow-billed Nuthatch Sitta solangiae, Black-hooded Laughingthrush Garrulax
milleti, White-cheeked Laughingthrush G. vassali, Collared
Laughingthrush G. yersini, Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler (Indochinese
Wren Babbler) Jabouilleia danjoui and Vietnamese Greenfinch Carduelis
monguilloti. Black-crowned Crocias Crocias langbiansis.
The
Dalat Plateau also supports distinctive and endemic sub-species which have been
split (or potential split) as difference species such as Rufous-backed Sibia,
Black-headed Sibia, Blue-winged Minla, Black-throated Sunbird and Red
Crossbill, Vietnamese Cutia (Cutia legalleni) split from Cutia (Cutia
nipalensis), Black-crowned Fuvetta (Alcippe
klossi)split
from Rufous-winged Fulvetta (Alcippe castaneceps), Black (Grey) - headed
Parrotbill.
This
four-day birding itinerary is a sample for comprehending the avifaunas of the
plateau. We will visit all key spots including Ta Nung, Langbian mt., Tuyen Lam
and Di Linh (Deo Nui San).

Day
1. Pick up in the early morning, drive to Da Lat. Birding in the afternoon.
Overnight
at Ngoc Lan/Hoang Gia/Novotel hotel (3 nights)
Day
2 & day 3 . Da Lat Plateau Endemic Bird Area Two full days exploring
Da Lat plateau, first of our visits is Ta Nung, a small private evergreen
forest but is the most accessible site for the rare and endemic species
Grey-crowned Crocias. Other goodies endemic such as Orange-breasted,
Black-hooded Laughingthrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, Vietnamese Greenfinch may also
be found here. The second visit is Langbian Mt, the high peak at 2,169 m asl.
This forest support to the most sought-after species, the beautiful and
skulking endemic Collared Laughingthrush. The Black-crowned Fulvetta (split
from Rufous-winged Fulvetta) is the common endemic among other targets:
Wintering Mugimaki Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Yellow-cheeked Tit,
Grey-crowned Tit (Black-throated Tit), Vietnamese Cutia,...
Day
4. Da Lat – Di Linh. The third visit of Da Lat plateau is driving to Di Linh
for a half day birding. Afetrnoon drive back to Sai Gon
